YU Hosts Inaugural Ceremony and Seminar for Parent Policy Research Institute on February 13 Six-Year Research Project Supported by Ministry of Education Promoting Communication Among Parents, Teachers, and Students [February 14, 2025] <YU held the inaugural ceremony and commemorative seminar for the Parent Policy Research Institute at Cheonma Art Center on the 13th.> On February 13, YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) hosted the inaugural ceremony and commemorative seminar for the Parent Policy Research Institute, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, at the university's Cheonma Art Center. The event marked the official launch of the institute, drawing key figures such as JANG Mi-ran, Director of the Teacher and Parent Support Bureau, HWANG Ji-hye, Head of the Parent Policy Division, KWON Sun-hwa, Director of the National Parent Support Center, and academic experts including JEON Je-sang, Professor at Gongju National University of Education, JU Dong-beom, Professor at Pukyong National University, and JUNG Sung-soo, Professor at Daegu National University of Education. Designated last September under the Ministry of Education's Humanities and Social Sciences Academic Research Support Program, the Parent Policy Research Institute, led by Professor KIM Byeong-ju, will conduct diverse research activities aimed at policy development and foundational studies in parental engagement over the next six years (3+3 years). The project will receive an annual research fund of KRW 260 million, including KRW 130 million for the first year. The commemorative seminar, held alongside the opening ceremony, focused on the theme of "Assessing and Advancing Parent Policy." Key presentations and discussions covered topics such as: ▲Research Directions and Challenges in Parent Policy ▲Implementation Processes and Policy Trends ▲Current Status and Challenges of Parent Support Organizations ▲Research Trends and Future Tasks. Participants engaged in designated discussions and open Q&A sessions, both on-site and via Zoom, fostering in-depth dialogue about the importance and development of parent-focused policies. Professor KIM Byeong-ju, Director of the Parent Policy Research Institute, emphasized, "Our institute aims to establish the role of parents as key educational stakeholders, promoting stronger communication between home and school. We will strive to create an environment where parents, teachers, and students can collaborate for meaningful change." Looking ahead, the Parent Policy Research Institute, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, plans to implement key initiatives this year, including: ▲Developing and distributing Parent Guidebooks tailored to children's developmental stages ▲Expanding the "Together School" campaign and operating digital platforms to promote a culture of communication. These initiatives aim to provide practical support that directly benefits parents. Chemistry Seniors JANG Do-won and KIM Young-hwon Consecutively Publish Papers in International Journals Undergraduate Students Recognized for Global Research Capabilities through Annual Outstanding Publications [January 21, 2025] <From left, Chemistry students JANG Do-won and KIM Young-hwon> Yeungnam University undergraduate students have published papers as first authors in prestigious international academic journals. Chemistry students continue to gain international research recognition by publishing papers in international academic journals annually. Chemistry seniors JNAG Do-won and KIM Young-hwon published papers as first authors in prestigious international journals 'Surfaces and Interfaces' (Impact Factor 6.2, published December 1, 2024) and 'Applied Materials Today' (Impact Factor 7.2, published February 1, 2025), respectively. The students' research proposed innovative technologies addressing environmental challenges and sustainable energy production, receiving high evaluations for both academic achievements and potential practical applications. JANG Do-won's research developed a photocatalyst capable of removing harmful phenol from water while simultaneously producing eco-friendly hydrogen using light. The photocatalyst completely eliminated phenol within six hours and produced 680μmol of hydrogen per gram, demonstrating exceptional performance and stability with consistent effectiveness through multiple uses. The research highlighted the technology's effectiveness in environmental purification and renewable energy production, drawing attention as an innovative solution for a sustainable future. KIM Young-hwon presented research on developing a novel composite material that generates hydrogen energy while simultaneously eliminating bacteria using light. The composite material, combining silver nanoparticles, zinc oxide (ZnO), and reduced graphene oxide, produced 840μmol of hydrogen per gram over ten hours and eliminated over 90% of harmful bacteria like E. coli when exposed to light. The research was evaluated as presenting a practical technology simultaneously addressing energy production and environmental issues. Professor KANG Mi-suk from Yeungnam University's Chemistry Department, who supervised both students, stated, "The research by JANG Do-won and KIM Young-hwon is significant not only for its academic achievements but also for presenting practical solutions to environmental and energy challenges."

The W Songwon Foundation was established by WOO Sang-hyeon, Director of W Hospital, a Ministry of Health and Welfare-designated specialized hospital for joint and microsurgery in Daegu-Gyeongbuk. The foundation was named after WOO’s late father, Professor WOO Bok-won of Daegu University, who went by the pen name Songwon. Through the W Songwon Foundation, Director Woo has pledged an annual donation of KRW 20 million for 10 years, totaling KRW 200 million, to support research at YU College of Medicine. These funds are allocated to the W Songwon Researcher Award to recognize outstanding medical research achievements. Now in its third year, this year’s Grand Prize was awarded to Professor KANG Seok-hwi (Department of Internal Medicine). Professors CHOI Hyung-chul (Department of Pharmacology) and JEONG Seung-min (Department of Internal Medicine) received Excellence Awards. The recipients were granted KRW 10 million for the Grand Prize and KRW 5 million each for the Excellence Awards. The opening ceremony, held at the Smart Education Center, was attended by over 50 key officials, including President CHOI Oe-chool, Director of the Education and Innovation PARK Seung-woo, and Director of International Education KIM Jae-chun. The Smart Education Center spans approximately 360 pyeong and integrates state-of-the-art technologies into a comprehensive educational space. It is equipped with administrative facilities for remote education planning and instructional design, next-generation integrated studio spaces, and dedicated areas for fostering one-person creators. Notably, the next-generation integrated studio is built on an NDI (Network Device Interface) platform, featuring advanced virtual reality technology, such as an XR studio. Industry Perspective University Evaluation has been done since 2008 to expand communication between industry and universities, to cultivate human resources that meet industry demands, and to improve university curriculum and departments are directly evaluated by industry personnel and talent development staff from related organizations. The 2024 evaluation covered five sectors: textiles, media, electricity, eco-friendly vehicles, and drones. It assessed 32 departments across 20 universities based on curriculum design, implementation, and outcomes. The universities that received the best evaluations were jointly awarded certification plaques in the names of the Ministry of Education, the Five Economic Organizations, and ABEEK. These plaques were presented to each department during award ceremony. President CHOI Oe-chool emphasized, “In 2024, YU has achieved outstanding recognition in global university rankings for education, research, social responsibility, and leadership. This evaluation reflects our dedication to providing industry-relevant education and preparing students as workforce-ready professionals.
